We have Pomeranian dogs that are so cute, and 24 WILD looking chickens! Pretty soon now the hens will all begin to lay eggs which I plan to offer at below market prices to my clients, friends and neighbors. We’ll see how that goes but meanwhile the kids and I are having a blast hanging around with all the chickens!
While we enjoy my child-friendly home, we get to also enjoy watching the horseback riders pass by on the trails. I am a fairly decent horsewoman myself, so I answer all the questions the children have about the equestrians and horses riding by. I teach them the names of the riding equipment.
First though, we concentrate on treating my own little house pets or even any little wild creatures that may happen by my home with love and care. Catch, photograph and release! We have our emphasis on the awe and beauty of the nature all around us and I teach kids in my care to respect it all.
We are currently doing projects in the garden. CLICK HERE to see some of the plants we are planting mostly from seeds. I buy seeds and bare root plants and my little friends and I get right down into the mud, planting and just have a blast. When we get too warm, it’s on with the sprinklers and the water play begins!
At meals we learn good manners, and at play we learn to share and be caring. We are sparing with the TV but enjoy Discovery Channel and shows that are about our earth, its environment, the animals and nature and some of the educational or children’s shows. Of course Sesame Street and Mr. Roger’s Neighborhood are favorites of mine, too.
I love to teach the kids how much fun one can have with a good sense of humor. There is nothing better than watching a toddler tell a joke or say a big, long important word I taught them to surprise their parents. I get a lot more cooperation from infants on up with a gentle sense of humor entertwined with proper guidance towards goals, like eating nicely at the table, sharing toys without a battle. I ask the older kids to show the smaller ones the very best example of responsible and good behavior so they can do that well, too. I want them to be proud of themselves, too, as I most certainly always am.
Other things we love to do are read books, play with puzzles and flash cards, color the concrete with sidewalk chalk and have little pretend tea parties. The kids also enjoy nice, healthy meals that are brought from home please, and afternoon snoozes. Sometimes we make art projects to take home and share with the kids’ families. We are always busy! There are so many things to do!
